Post Liver Transplant Consultation?

Question by Nidz: Post Liver Transplant Consultation?
My father in law had his liver transplant in in 1998, in Leeds, UK. Since then he has been taking immuno-suppressant drug called ‘Neoral’. He has overall been in good health during all these years. During the last four years his kidneys have been weakened due to his intake of ‘Neoral’, but lately due to reduction in intake of Neoral his kidneys’ condition has become stable. Please note that he still has positive Hepatitis C in his body.

We need guidance as to whom he should consult for future care and course of medication. Should he go to a liver surgeon or physician? Someone advised to meet Dr. Muhammad Rela in Chennai, India. We live in Pakistan and can try to go to any country for this consultation. Any helpful suggestions or names and locations of specific doctors will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Nidz, It is wonderful that your father-in-law has lived since his liver transplant 14 years ago. I suggest you seek a large city medical center which is an organ transplant center. Surgeons are not the most skilled in transplant organ immunotherapy. Perhaps you might begin by contacting the UK Leeds hospital where his initial liver transplant was performed. I am in the USA. Two outstanding hospitals here are The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. You could find both on the internet and inquire as to their capabilities. In India, such treatment centers may exist in university hospitals in New Delhi, Mumbai, or Channai. I wish you and your father-in-law success and good health.
