The process of medically and psychologically rehabilitating a person for drug or substance abuse is generally called drug rehabilitation. This applies to all the addicts whether it is for alcohol, coke, nicotine or other substances considered being addictive. The process is usually a supportive action to induce treatment and recovery from dependency from these substances and is usually seen as the answer to fight drug addiction.

Generally, drug rehabilitation enables a patient to stop the use of the substance they are addicted to. The aim of drug rehabilitation is to allow the individual to be able to resist the drug and bring them back as productive and functioning members of the society.

Drug rehabilitation requires the person who applied to participate in the rehabilitation process. This includes them being open-minded and willing to undergo treatments and activities which the attending physicians and counselors may prescribe. The only way that a drug addict can be cured of his addiction is when they allow themselves to realize the gravity and the reality of their addiction. Various methods and treatments are applied to these patients based on how responsive they are to the treatments in order for them to live their lives productively and without the use of drugs.

There are also supplementary programs that help quicken the rehabilitation process. These include local support groups, extended care centers, recovery and sober houses, residential treatments, out patients and many others. There are also rehabilitation centers that focus on gender and age specific programs.

In order to be able to properly treat a patient with drug addiction, physicians and counselors must be able to examine the specific aspects, conditions and situations that the drug addict is subject to in order to determine which drug rehabilitation method would be applicable. It is also important to note that the instances of drug addiction are affecting younger and younger members of the society. This is a disturbing fact that drug addiction centers are well aware of. In reaction to this, they implement various programs depending on the urgency of the case. They are assessed to determine who among them are able to go to school and those who are no longer capable of doing so; a choice between being an inpatient or an outpatient will be considered.

The location of treatment is also one f the considerations. The rehabilitation facility must be considered to be a primary factor in the determination of the appropriate treatment. They chosen facility must have facilities and utilities in order to suit the needs of the patient. This important factor must be considered very carefully since it is usually related to the success or failure of the rehabilitation endeavor. The actual treatments should also be determined in relation to the drug use of the patient. They need to be aware of the kind of drug that caused the addiction, its dosage, frequency of drug use as well as its duration. All of these have medical implications and gives us an understanding of the social needs of the patient which will in turn provide the physicians and counselors a good idea of how to handle particular drug addiction cases. Also, personnel in drug rehabilitation cases must take into consideration personal circumstances such as the patient’s psychological profile, religious views, other mental or physical illness(es) and also the availability of treatments and methods to be used to rehabilitate the patient. Also, they must also consider the financial situation of the patient and make sure that the treatments are affordable to the patient or the sponsoring party.

Rehabilitation is possible with all kinds of substance abuse. The key to get over any kind of addiction is to make sure that they would be able to find suitable treatments that are effective to patients. Also, in order to better understand and get over addictions, they must be able to determine the root of the addiction process – its reason and its processes. This is the key to prevent the addiction from happening again and preventing the dependency to again inflict the dependency that leads to substance abuse.

Drug Rehabilitation is a tried and tested method to reduce and eliminate drug and other substance dependency. Studies also show that addicts who have overcome their addiction through drug rehabilitation were seen to be more likely to attain stability in different aspects of their life.
