Why Is “Tough Love” So Hard?

Question by kittyrun: Why is “tough love” so hard?
My cousin is 40 has had several addiction problems, lives at home. Recently, he had a hit and run, alcohol involved, driving w/out a license/insurance, filing a false police report (said the car was stolen), and the owners of the building he hit are planning to sue. His parents bailed him out. Things like this have happened before, and every time they say it’s the last time, but then bail him out. Why can’t they just see the more they “help” him the more messed up he’ll be? They both have terminal cancer and need care, not this stress.

They let their feelings get in the way or they feel like perhaps they didn’t parent well and blame themselves. Hopefully with all this stuff he did he will serve some jail time. Not sure if he will learn his lesson or not though.

Good luck!
